The past weekend I led several birders to the most birding hotspots in
the Soutpansberg and Venda areas and we have seen a lot of special
birds in the area..Starting from Friday 16th I led birders from
Gauteng Hylton,Billy and wife to Botanical Garden at Thohoyandou and
we have seen amongst others several sightings of the Blue Spotted
Wood-Dove,Buff Spotted Flufftail,Pink Throated Twinspot,Red Capped
Robin Chat,Bearded Scrub Robin,Terrestrial Brownbul,Red Faced
Cisticola,Spotted Flycatcher,Yellow Fronted Tinkerbird,Yellow Bishop
and Red Collared Bishop.
Latter in the afternoon we drove to Miombo Forest at Gundani camp site
hoping to see some of the special birds like Southern Hyliota,White
Breasted Cuckooshike but the weather changed dramatically and we were
left with no choice to bird in the rain and windy conditions but we
did saw birds like Piink Throated Twinspot,Narina Trogon,Scaly
Throated Honeyguide,Golden Tailed Woodpecker,Yellow Breasted
Apalis,Southern Boubou,Cape and Chispot Batis,Golden Breasted Bunting
and Green Backed Camaroptera,
On Saturday morning we went to Golwe Campsite in Venda some 45 minutes
drive east from Thohoyandou Town.We had superb sightings of some
special birds such as Black Sparrowhawk,Pink Throated Twinspot,Narina
Trogon,African Pygmy Kingfisher,Yellow Bellied Greenbul,Red Capped
Robin Chat,Broad Billed Roller,Bearded Scrub Robin and Willow Warbler.
On Sunday I took out a well known birder from America in Carlifornia
John Rothman to Roodewal Nature Reserve Luvuvhu River and Entabeni
Forest and we had a remarkable list of birds and at Roodewal Forest we
saw African Broadbill,Narina Trogon,Eastern Nicator,Scaly Throated
Honeyguide,Tambourine Dove,Red Faced Cisticola and Olive Woodpecker
amongst others.
In the afternoon we went to Entabeni Forest east of Louis Trichardt
town and on our way to the top of the mountain we saw a Half Collared
Kingfisher and Mountain Wagtail in the Lutanandwa River.We also
stopped by the big Gums tree and we had a Bat Hawk and Eurasian
Hobby.List of the birds we saw at the top were Orange Ground
Thrush,White Starred Robin,Chorister Robin Chat,Olive
Bushshrike,Yellow Throated Woodland Warbler,Knysna Turaco,Swee
Waxbill,Forest Buzzard,Narina Trogon,Yellow Streaked Greenbul,African
Emerald Cuckoo,Grey Cuckooshrike and Green Twinspot.
Early Monday morning we went to Luvuvhu River and Muirhead Dams.The
list amongst others were African Finfoot,White Backed Night Heron,Half
Collarred Kingfisher,African Pygmy Goose,African Black Duck,Horus
Swift,Black Saw-Wing,Levailant's Cisticola and Malachite Kingfisher.
